This summer, VCA hosted pop-up arts engagements all over town. We asked folks to decorate paper lanterns with their answers to questions like "what lights you up about Vermillion?" and "what do you hope for the future of Vermillion?" Our goal was to get us thinking about what we love about our community and what Vermillion can do and be in the future.
Artist Amy Fill led these sessions for us. She chose paper lanterns as the way to collect answers because they represent hope, honor, and celebration across cultures. And you created hundred of lanterns! They are a celebration of Vermillion voices, what we love, how we live, and who we hope we can become together.
The culmination of this public art project will light up the Pocket Park next to 12 E. Main October 21–23. The installation opening will be Friday, October 21 6–8pm. More details at @vermculture on Facebook or Instagram.
This project sponsored by the South Dakota Arts Council's Residencies for Recovery Grant. Residencies for Recovery aims to involve artists as creative problem solvers, able to build community bonds.
