The I Believe / The Sioux Falls Prison Project was an extensive 5-week endeavor led by Suzanne Costello, Artistic Co-Director of Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (SPDT), with dance assistant Sophia Diehl and visual artist Ariadne (Ari) Albright. Funded by a National Endowment for the Arts, the South Dakota Arts Council with the Sioux Falls Catholic Diocese, I Believe included a series of life story/movement and visual art workshops for the inmate population, culminating in the participants sharing Movement Stories and an art exhibition in May and June 2023. This project held particular significance, addressing historical barriers that incarcerated populations have faced in accessing the arts, aiming to nurture the well-being of incarcerated individuals through artistic expression. Arts & Incarcerated Community Talk facilitated by Suzanne Costello and Ariadne Albright, Arts in Health Instructor, USD, with guests Lisa Brunick, Art Therapist, Juvenile Detention Center, Sioux Falls, and Lawrence Diggs, Compassionate Outreach Group, SD State Penitentiary
