Description
We have a great place to walk near our magnificent Missouri River. North Alabama Bend, is located 2 miles southwest of Vermillion. Few people in the Vermillion area know where North Alabama Bend is, much less its significance. We would like to help change that.
Geoffrey Gray-Lobe and Dan Peterson will lead the walk. Geoffrey is a volunteer naturalist with the National Park Service and Dan is Chief of Interpretation, Education & Outreach with the Missouri National Recreational River (MNRR).
Geoffrey and Dan will lead us around the Bend and
- Point out native plants, critters, and geological features and discuss its natural history
- Explain the history of the acquisition by the U.S. Corps of Engineers
- Discuss current challenges facing the river.
Bring your friends, family, and binoculars and pack a lunch, if you like. Dan will bring binoculars from the MNRR, including some for children.
North Alabama Bend has two parking areas along SD Highway 19. We will meet at the southern lot.
