About Us

The Vermillion Area Arts Council [VAAC] is committed to the support and advocacy for the value of artists, arts education, and arts enjoyment, with an emphasis on fine and visual art for the tri state region (SD, IA, NE) surrounding Clay County, South Dakota. As owner of the historic Washington Street Arts Center, the VAAC provides a venue for artists & students, and welcomes patrons & community through exhibitions, concerts and arts events. The VAAC is one of the oldest arts organizations in South Dakota, and as such, has served as an ''incubator for the arts'' - much of what makes Vermillion the vibrant community it is, and has provided arts programming and advocacy continuously since its founding. We look toward the future with both creativity and hindsight, to continue to serve as incubator and to empower everyone to live and grow creatively.
