NO CUTTING ASH TREES

Issued Date: May 27, 2025

(Vermillion, SD) According to Vermillion Ordinance § 90.81, “no person shall transport raw wood from any variation of genus Fraxinus, commonly known as ash, from Memorial Day to Labor Day without permission from the City Tree Specialist or designee.”

The Emerald ash borer (EAB) is a boring beetle that feeds on all species of North American ash, in the genus Fraxinus. Adults are about half an inch long, slender, and a metallic green color. They normally emerge from ash trees during June or July and leave behind D-shaped exit holes about 1/8" in size.

Cutting or transporting ash wood during the EAB’s active season can unintentionally spread the pest to healthy trees. The most common way EAB spreads is through the movement of infested firewood or tree debris.

If a storm or strong wind damages your ash tree during the restricted period, you may request permission from the City Tree Specialist to remove affected limbs.

When limbs, branches, or trees are cut from ash trees, these insects can move to other trees.

The Emerald Ash Borer has not been reported in Vermillion. The City is taking a proactive approach to ensure that trees in the community remain safe and healthy. Thank you for protecting the trees by not cutting any branches or limbs from ash trees between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
