Two Titles, One Town: Vermillion Named Community of the Year and Best Small Town Arts Scene

The Vermillion area community is celebrating two major recognitions this week. The city was named Community of the Year by the South Dakota Governor’s Office of Economic Development and Best Small Town Arts Scene by the USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards.

“It is a special week for Vermillion,” said Mayor Jon Cole. “It is an honor to not only be named the Community of the Year, but to once again be recognized as having the Best Small Town Arts Scene in the nation.”

COMMUNITY OF THE YEAR

Vermillion was named South Dakota’s Community of the Year earlier this week at the Governor’s Conference on Economic Development. The recognition celebrates the city’s continued commitment to economic growth, housing and commercial development, and workforce and childcare expansion.

“Vermillion is proud to be recognized as this year’s Community of the Year,” said Cole. “The city has shown strong momentum and steady progress across multiple areas that support growth, quality of life and long-term stability in our community.”

The Community of the Year recognition comes as Vermillion continues to see significant investment in public infrastructure, manufacturing and industry. The community recently celebrated the opening of the Clay County Law Enforcement Center & Jail, a 54,000-square-foot facility that houses the Vermillion Police Department and Clay County Sheriff’s Office. Masaba also completed its new Steel and Metal Fabrication Facility – a 145,000-square-foot expansion that helps meet the needs of its growing customer base. In addition, Cypress Rail Solutions recently established operations in Vermillion, bringing railcar maintenance and cleaning services that support the city and county’s agriculture community.

“Vermillion’s approach to economic development is similar to Governor Rhoden’s – we’re open for opportunity,” said Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company President & CEO Jim Peterson. “We have a strong VCDC Board of Directors, along with community leaders who are aligned on the same path toward growth. Vermillion is a great community to invest and grow within.”

Recent additions to the community’s amenities include the new Cotton Park Courts, which feature six outdoor pickleball courts and two tennis courts. The city has also added new park spaces, including residential pocket parks and the sensory park currently under development by Sesdac.

Housing expansion has been a driving force behind Vermillion’s momentum. Recent growth includes new multifamily units and single-family homes, as well as the state’s first co-housing dwelling.

“We’re seeing significant progress in housing across Vermillion,” said Peterson. “With new homes, multifamily units and innovative projects on the horizon, we’re working to expand housing options that support our workforce and long-term economic development.”

Childcare capacity has also expanded, with 36 new slots added in 2025 and an additional 46 in 2026.

“It’s important that, as the city grows, we ensure our community has access to accessible and affordable childcare,” said Cole.

In addition to new childcare facilities, the Boys & Girls Club of Vermillion has expanded offerings to include tutoring and free traditional club membership through June 30, 2026.

“From business growth to housing and childcare, Vermillion is committed to creating opportunities and building a community where people want to live, work and invest,” Cole said.

BEST SMALL TOWN ARTS SCENE

Vermillion has once again been named the Best Small Town Arts Scene by USA TODAY 10BEST Readers’ Choice Awards for the second year in a row.

Nominations were curated by a panel of subject matter experts and editors before being voted on by the public.

Vermillion has a vibrant arts and culture scene, with organizations, events and public art that contribute to its national recognition, including the following.

  • The National Music Museum, which recently earned the No. 3 spot on USA TODAY’s 10BEST Readers’ Choice list for Best Music Museums.
  • The W.H. Over Museum and Austin-Whittemore House Museum.
  • Six public murals and a rotating sculpture walk throughout its historic downtown and on the campus of the University of South Dakota.
  • More than 300 annual performances and events through the USD College of Fine Arts.
  • South Dakota Shakespeare Festival.
“There’s rarely a quiet weekend in Vermillion,” said Cole. “This recognition reflects the passion of the many artists, organizations, and community members who work year-round to make arts and culture a defining part of Vermillion.”
