United Way of Vermillion is again providing free tax preparation services at the Community Connection Center through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program. This initiative aims to assist individuals and families in need by offering reliable and trustworthy tax preparation at no cost.
The VITA program has been serving communities for over 50 years, providing free tax help to individuals who generally make $70,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and retireess on fixed incomes. While the IRS oversees the program, VITA sites are managed by IRS partners and staffed by dedicated volunteers who are committed to making a difference in their communities.
The program will run from February 3 through April 15. This is the forth year that United Way of Vermillion has facilitated VITA. Again this year, students studying tax law will serve as volunteer preparers for the program in addition to community volunteers.
VITA services are not only free but also a highly trusted resource for accurate tax preparation. All VITA volunteers must pass IRS-certified training that meets or exceeds federal tax law standards. This comprehensive training ensures that volunteers are well-equipped to handle tax returns while maintaining strict privacy and confidentiality standards. Every return prepared at a VITA site undergoes a thorough quality review before submission to ensure accuracy and compliance with tax regulations.
“We are proud to continue to offer this valuable service to the Vermillion community,” said Kelsey Collier-Wise, Executive Director of United Way of Vermillion. “Filing taxes can be a daunting task, especially for those with limited resources. Through VITA, we hope to ease that burden and ensure that eligible individuals receive the assistance they need to file their taxes accurately, efficiently, and at no cost.” VITA in Vermillion is made possible with technology support from Dakota PC Warehouse.
Individuals interested in utilizing the free tax preparation services should call the Community Connection Center at 605-658-0118 or visit 9 Court Street during business hours to confirm their eligibility and schedule an appointment.
