VCDC Annual Celebration Recognizes Excellence in Business and Community Leadership

Businesses, organizations and individuals were honored at the Vermillion Area Chamber & Development Company’s Annual Celebration on Thursday, April 9. 

The VCDC Annual Celebration, Vermillion’s premier business event of the year, recognizes the businesses, nonprofits, entrepreneurs and individuals who make the Vermillion area a great place to live and work. Awards were presented to those who have demonstrated commitment to the community through leadership, service and innovation.

Larry Brady was presented with the President’s Award, a special recognition given by VCDC President and CEO Jim Peterson. A local business and property owner, Brady has made a significant impact in Vermillion through his investments and philanthropy, including recent contributions to the Boys & Girls Club of Vermillion and the Dakota Hospital Foundation.

Bruce Kelley, Ph.D., dean of the University of South Dakota College of Fine Arts, was named Community Leader of the Year, in recognition of his leadership and impact on Vermillion’s arts community. A talented musician and dedicated advocate for the arts, Kelley has played a key role in establishing Vermillion as a vibrant arts hub, contributing to its recognition as one of the best small town arts scenes. Through his leadership at USD, Kelley helps shape the next generation of artists while supporting hundreds of events each year.

Sheri Ouellette, a financial advisor with Edward Jones, was awarded the Chamber Member of the Year Award. With more than 30 years of experience in finance, Ouellette is known for building strong relationships and providing a personalized, high-quality experience to those she serves. She is actively involved in the community, serving on the boards of United Way of Vermillion and Domestic Violence Safe Options Services, and is a dedicated VCDC Ambassador.

Dave and Amy Hertz, owners of Midwest Ready Mix & Equipment, were named Family-Owned Business of the Year for their strong record of success and community service. In business for more than 20 years, the Hertz family has distinguished itself not only through its operations, but through its dedication to giving back. For over 15 years, they have hosted an annual fundraising event supporting local nonprofits, community initiatives and families in need.

Lizzy Bye, owner of Recharge Training, was awarded the Spirit of Entrepreneurship in recognition of her commitment to building community through business. Recharge Training has quickly established a strong and supportive following, centered on empowerment, personalized programming and meaningful connections. Through partnerships, events, and community engagement, she has demonstrated the impact of turning an idea into a thriving business that enriches the Vermillion area.

Dr. Jacob Quail was presented with the Mayor’s Community Service Award by Mayor Jon Cole in recognition of his dedication to serving the Vermillion community. Known professionally as a skilled surgeon at Sanford Health, Dr. Quail’s impact extends far beyond his work in health care. He plays an active leadership role in the Boys & Girls Club, contributes to Vermillion Community Theatre, supports local students through the Vermillion Booster Club, and is involved in organizations such as Rotary and the Dakota Resources Board. He also supports Special Olympics and historic preservation efforts in the community. 

Kathy Carlson was honored as the United Way of Vermillion Volunteer of the Year, recognized for her dedication and commitment to serving others. Carlson has given countless hours to programs at the Community Connection Center, including her work with Feeding Vermillion as a past board president, volunteering regularly at the food pantry, and serving on the food recovery team to ensure food reaches those in need. She is a familiar face at the Welcome Table each week and also supports families through her work with the Salvation Army.

Cori Hup, chair of the Vermillion NEXT Young Professionals Network and assistant director of admissions at USD, was named the Vermillion NEXT Young Professional of the Year for her excellence in both community engagement and professional achievement. 

In addition to the individual awards, 34 businesses were recognized with Brick Awards, celebrating new openings, expansions and continued operations under new ownership throughout the past year. 

The Annual Celebration brought together members of the Vermillion-area community for an evening of connection and celebration.
